Cohort Descriptions

Sub-cohorts of the KoGES

  • Six prospective cohort studies categorized as either population-based or gene-environmental model studies
  • 20,000 participants are inspected annually by university hospitals and medical institutions (As of 2014, 29 institutions have participated)
  • Approximately 245,000 participants have been conducted based on cumulated baseline studies
  • Active follow-up has been expanded to overall cohort studies since 2012

KoGES_cardiovascular disease association study (CAVAS) 2004 Eleven rural areas - Men and women living in rural areas aged 40 years or older

- Follow-up started in 2007 in six areas
KoGES_health examinees (HEXA) study 2004 Nationwide medical institutions - Men and women aged 40 years or older who had health examination at medical institutions/centers

Gene-environment model studies KoGES_twin and family study 2005 Seoul, Busan - Twins and their families
- 3,202 baseline participants
- Follow-up from 2008 to 2014
KoGES_emigrant study 2005 Japan, China - Korean emigrants who have lived in Japan (Kobe, Osaka) and China (Changchun, Yanbian) for more than 15 years and their children, native Japanese and Chinese
